About

As an English and Studio Art major, Candyce Harrell has always been interested in how visual art can enhance literature. She takes inspiration from the Romantics and Impressionists, enjoying the emphasis these movements have on nature. She is fascinated by the poet William Blake, who’s illuminated poetry served as an inspiration for her series The Goddess and the Soldier, The Knights of Taria, and Illuminated Poems, two of which have works featured in the Virginia Literary Review and the Currents Literary Magazine. Her medium of choice is acrylic painting; however, she has experience with printmaking, oil painting, graphic design, photography, digital illustration, and charcoal. Her work is characterized by its fascination with complementary colors, often using blues, purples, yellows, and oranges to highlight focal points. She is inspired by Van Gogh, painting with short brush strokes and swirling patterns like many of his landscapes. This inspiration is reflected in her contribution to Sing for Hope, where she painted a piano to create the work, Sea of Color. After graduation, she plans on working in the publishing industry, using her talents to continue to illustrate her favorite stories.
